Ways to Plan for Pet Safety and Custody

Ensure your pet's license is in your name.
Prove companionship. Ensure you can prove you were responsible for your pet's feeding, grooming, and health. This can be established through your vet, pet trainer, groomer, etc.
Look into potential boarding options for your pet.
Include food and medication for your pet in your own safety kit if planning to leave.
Include your animal in your order of protection (OOP). 30 states currently allow you to include an animal in your OOP.
Make sure you have copies of your pet's medical and vaccine records.
If possible, make sure your pet is current and up-to-date on its vaccines.
Create an info sheet that includes your pet's photo, feeding schedule, any medical conditions, and likes/dislikes.
Pack your pet's leash, collar, and identification tags.
Reach out to a friend or family member who may be able to provide temporary care and shelter for your pet.
If you need to leave your pet with your abuser, request that a law enforcement officer accompany you if you return to retrieve it.
Make sure any updated identification tags you acquire for your pet after leaving do not include information you wouldn't want your abuser to know.
If you do leave your pet with a friend or family member, ensure they do not divulge your pet's whereabouts to your abuser.
When fleeing with a cat, ensure you transport your pet in a carrier as they can be easily spooked.
Know your pet's hiding spots so you don't waste time looking for them if you need to leave in a hurry.
