Taking Your Breath Away: A Campaign to stop strangulation and save lives

Posted 02/11/2025

Did you know that a woman whose partner applies pressure to her neck even once is 750% more likely to be killed at the hands of that same partner? It's not choking. It’s not breath play. It’s strangulation. And it is one of the best predictors for femicide. As we prepare to mark 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we are proud to roll out a campaign aimed at educating survivors, their support networks, front-line service providers, and more broadly you, the masses, about strangulation. It’s called ‘Taking Your Breath Away’ and it comes with two calls to action: ➡️ That all front-line service providers receive strangulation-specific training. ➡️ And that we, across all sectors and across this country, begin tracking cases of strangulation, no matter the perceived degree of injury. Follow along for the facts, the myths, and the urgency. He may take your breath away. But not like that. https://youtu.be/VPelCOQD_A8 https://yrccs.ca/strangulation-awareness/ If you or someone you know needs help, call 1-855-541-2220, or visit yrccs.ca. Special thanks to warrior ‘Ana,’ along with @Casey Gwinn and @Gael Strack from @Alliance for HOPE International’s Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention for their support of and involvement in this campaign. #TakingYourBreathAway #Strangulation #IPV #GBV #16Days
