Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault State Coalitions (U.S.)

Each state has a domestic violence coalition. Below are all 50 and more. Many of your local shelters, programs and agencies belong to these coalitions. The role of a state coalition in the domestic violence ecosystem is different from that of local shelters, programs and agencies. State coalitions may be of service to you and learning what they do may help you understand how they can help your individual situation. Here are the differences:

Local Shelters, Programs and Agencies

• Helps individuals obtain protection orders and navigate legal system
• Provides hotlines, shelters, health services, counseling, job training for victims
• Trains professionals and local authorities on domestic violence issues
• School and community-based education and prevention

State Coalitions

• Lobbies legislature on improvement of protection of order laws
• Helps to set standards for care and service for member organizations
• Seeks and distributes funding from state and other sources
• Develops training materials and information for state officials
• Advocates for housing and public housing policies
• Works with media to raise awareness
